What is “Kettlebell Sport”?
One of the most hardcore, mentally and physically challenging sports in the world: a highly challenging power endurance feat. Kettlebell Sport is the national weightlifting sport of Russia. It is a competitive lifting sport that lasts ten minutes. The champion is the person with the most repetitions. There is also a ranking system in kettlebell sport similar to working towards black belt in martial arts. Kettlebell Sport is a fast growing sport; and a healthy sport for all ages. True Grit Kettlebell Gym is a member of American Kettlebell Alliance, the largest and fastest growing Kettlebell Sport organization in the Americas. Kettlebell Sport’s origins date back to the 1940s in the old USSR where it was cultivated in rural groups and Soviet military. It has since exploded beyond the Eastern Block borders and was introduced into the U.S. in 2011…and that’s why you haven’t heard of it!!
What are classic lifts?
Kettlebell Sport competitors, may compete in the Long Cycle, (clean and jerk), Snatch or Jerk Relay. These test the basics of functional movement - in a power endurance manner. The lifts are performed for a ten-minute time frame to complete as many clean, fixated lockouts overhead as possible. In classic Kettlebell Sport, the Men’s Long Cycle and Jerk relay are performed with two bells. The Snatch is performed with one bell. Women’s Long Cycle and Snatch are performed with one bell. When one bell is used, the lifter is allowed only one hand switch, and each lifter has ten minutes to complete as many repetitions as possible.
Why did you add events to the classic lifts?
These events are best described as stepping stones. Kettlebell Sport is truly a feat of strength and endurance and everyone needs a place to begin. In addition to being a great way to display our strength, they also allow us to get a taste of Kettlebell Sport. There is nothing like experiencing time on the platform and the camaraderie of a Kettlebell Sport competition. Although our relays and sprints are not classic Kettlebell Sport, they still require skill, strength, endurance, speed, coordination, flexibility and mental focus. They are in no way for the faint of heart.
